Swedish Meatballs With Garlic Herb Noodles

I am a foodie.  I love food.  Food calls to me.  I love discovering new food, recreating food, and indulging in comfort food.  This recipe is a little bit of all of those things for me.  This recipe was definitely discovering something new…it is a whole new, delicious flavor profile.  I recreated the egg noodle recipe that goes under the meatballs to accommodate my homemade egg noodles, and it has most definitely become one of my favorite comfort foods. This food calls to me.  Swedish meatballs is a dish that sings to my soul.  “Make me,” they say.  “You NEED me,” they say.  “You Love me,” they say.  And they…

    Hand-Rolled Egg Noodles (Homemade Pasta)

I have very fond childhood memories of making homemade noodles with my mom.  She would take the bones from the Thanksgiving turkey and boil them on low all day the day after Thanksgiving to make a flavorful bone broth.  To that she would add the leftover turkey meat, diced onion, celery, potatoes and carrots.  While those cooked, we would roll the noodles.  I loved working side by side with my mom cranking the noodle maker or feeding the dough through the rollers.  Nothing beats homemade turkey noodle soup the day after Thanksgiving. I am thankful for those memories from my childhood, and I am even more thankful that my children…

    Quick and Easy Breadsticks

Quick and Easy.  2 beautiful words to a busy Mom.  To a busy anybody.  And they are especially beautiful when in conjunction with getting a hot, yummy dinner on the table.  And they are ESPECIALLY beautiful when connected to a delicious yeasted bread.  Because we all know that yeasted breads are not quick. But these breadstick are!  From getting out the ingredients to on the table and in a mouth, these beauties take just about an hour!  Considering most yeasted breads have to rise for double that time, these breadsticks seem pretty miraculous. These miracles are fluffy and flavorful.  I love the crackly crust of baked parmesan on the top…

    Betty Jo’s Potato Salad

If you are looking for the perfect side dish for any BBQ, the perfect addition to any family meal, the perfect dish for your next potluck, look no further than this delicious Potato Salad. My memories of this potato salad go way back.  Way back to a childhood of family events and reunions.  I seem to remember this potato salad and my mom’s frosted brownies at every gathering.  This recipe comes from the kitchen of my amazing aunt, Betty Jo.  She is one incredible woman.  And this is one incredible recipe. Every time I make this for a potluck or a BBQ at a friends house or a side for…

    Vanilla German Pancakes

Our family grooves on these German Pancakes for breakfast.  They are loaded with protein, are fluffy and eggy and the perfect accompaniment to a sweet syrup.  When made in a hot cast iron pan, they have a fabulous little crunchy crust on the bottom.  The ingredient list is simple and short and they take very little hands-on-time to make, making them a perfect breakfast for a busy morning.   I made them on Monday morning this week. Anyone love Monday mornings???  I don’t.  I call Mondays “Damage Control.”  The weekend always seems to do damage…to the house, the kitchen and to the laundry.  And I make a very conscious decision to…

    Handmade Hamburger Buns

The other day, I walked out onto the porch to find my kiddos playing a game of “Sharks and Minnows” on their little bikes.  2 of them were sharks, patrolling the cement pad, and the others were the minnows, trying to race from one side of the cement to the other without getting bitten (bumped into) by the sharks. I laughed and cheered for them, and then decided that I wanted to get in on the fun.  I jumped in on one of their bikes to be a shark.  Dang, those bikes are small!  A few minutes in, after a bit of creaking protestation from the bike, my 3er said…

    Southern Style Pulled Pork

Hey y’all! We spent a good portion of our married lives in the South and we loved it.  We miss it.  The South did a lot of shaping us into the people we are today.  There is just something about that region of the world that grabs onto your heart and doesn’t let go.  A piece of my heart will always be in Alabama.  Partly because of the wonderful people there – we consider most of our friends there to be family – but also because of the culture.  There is something so wonderful about the FEELING of the south, the warmth and friendliness, the easy acceptance, the accents and…

Raising Bakers: Love Is What Matters

Our Family is obsessed with “The Greatest Showman.”  Anyone else???     We love the upbeat music, the uplifting lyrics and the entertaining, family friendly movie!  Whenever any work needs to be done around the house that the whole family is participating in, Daddy always tuns on the soundtrack, cranks up the volume, and we all sing along as we work.   I love hearing the kids sing to it at the top of their little voices. Baker Tip: Cranking up the Music makes the housework twice as fun…and it seems to go by twice as fast! Fun Fact:  even the (16 month old) baby sings it!!!  She dances along to the…

    Raising Bakers – Helping Daddy

Hey, this is Spencer (the husband) and I was told that I had to do a post since this blog is ”OURS”.  As of right now, my wife doesn’t want me to put my cooking abilities out there…I don’t know why.  I can make a killer Mac N Cheese, a great Totinos Pizza and, as one of my Sunday School kids once said, the best (Betty Crooker) Brownies she has ever had!  I’ll get her to let me post my recipes someday. hahahaha As kids, I think that we always want to help mom and dad out with the stuff that they do!  It doesn’t matter if it’s around the…

    Grandma Ann’s Fresh Apple Pie

This, as promised, is Grandma Ann’s recipe for Fresh Apple Pie.  I love how it’s in her handwriting, and I love how there are no instructions.  Like she was just THAT good.  She didn’t need step by steps.  She just knew how to make something amazing.  No instructions needed, thank-you-very-much.     I need instructions though, and I bet you would like some too.  I’m so thankful to live near my mother-in-law (Ann’s daughter) who popped on by to help my girls and I mix up these apple pies.  It was so much fun working in the kitchen with Grani, and she knew just what to do.  I cherish…
